i can't remember all the times i tried to tell myself to hold on to these moments as they pass...

i can tell i'm getting older. the compilation cd's they're selling on tv now include lots of songs that i grew up with a few years ago.

there's one, 'buzz ballads', that features a few seconds of 'a long december', which is of course by that band i have a weird attachment to, the counting crows. it's one of my favorite songs. i remember when it first came out around 98, i didn't like it a lot, i would make fun of it by messing up the lyrics and such. now it's one of my favorite songs. things change. i guess that's kinda why i'm writing this.

the title is a line from the song. it's something i've tried to live, too. everytime i had my warm smiles on, i was always thinking, 'try to capture this moment now, before you know it, it'll be gone.'

i have been talking with some of my friends over the past few weeks about memories. i've been having trouble just being able to smile at all the good times gone by. i just feel kinda upset because i know they're never coming back. it's something that always hits me hard when i'm in fort mill. there's always some point where all my friends and i are sitting in david's basement, and we start saying 'oh, remember that time...' and start going through our memories and laughing and just remembering the way things were. that seems to refute my misunderstanding about memories; i just can't seem to be able to look back sometimes wondering if i could've done something to keep that moment.

i live by the saying 'life isn't measured in the breaths you take, but in the moments that take your breath away.' i've had a lot of those moments, and i'm sure there's more to come. sometimes i just wish i wouldn't have to leave those moments.

'a long december,
and there's reason to believe,
that maybe this year
will be better than the last.'

i used to always sing that to myself, and i still catch myself singing it every few days now, but i don't think i believe it. i don't feel as hopeful for this year. college i can't be sure of, but i'm scared that this year might be the long december.
